For example if you are given a sequence that is 2 5 8 11 which is a arithmetic sequences the explicit definition is the formula. For example you can use the slope intercept form, y = mx + b where y is the first term and m is the constant difference. Then you solve for b and then you can use Y = m (difference) x is the term + b. And other way is tn= t1 + (n-1) x d, so for the sequence givenif you are asked for the 5th term you do the following. t5 = 2 + ( 5 - 1) x 3 (difference) .
t5 = 2 + 4 x 3 t5 = 2 + 12 = 14. That is an explicit definition.
